There is some dispute over the company’s early history, but it begins with Travis Bean , a California luthier who was building guitars with aluminum necks. Bean and Gary Kramer started the Travis Bean guitar company in , in Sun Valley, and while their guitars did well, Bean lost interest and left most of the business aspects to Kramer; the two parted ways. Kramer’s improvement consisted of two wooden inserts in the back of the neck. By he had hooked up with a friend from New York, Dennis Berardi, and the two founded BK International, which engaged luthier Phil Petillo to make prototypes for them. Other involved parties were Henry Vaccaro, a real estate person who invested money in the venture, and Peter LaPlaca, who had experience with Norlin, the company that owned Gibson Guitar Corporation from to The rest of the account is murky:
Mystery strat pickups – help identify?
Just finding these pickups is a challenge all its own. Even if one is purchased online at a hefty cost, how can you be sure of its vintage value? Up until , Fender did have several processes that can be measured to determine the date of their pickups. Determining Pickup Age Even if you’ve never really used a multimeter, don’t be intimidated by it for this project. All we are going to deal with is measuring the ohms of a pickup, written as such on your meter or by the? Turn on the multimeter and set it to the 20k ohms setting.

Tweet on Twitter Mention the subject of American acoustic guitars and one of the first names that will undoubtedly pop into your head will be C. A pretty impressive achievement. Bring up the topic of electrics, and Martin is hardly the first name of recall. Most coverage of the Martin brand is focused, quite rightly, on their substantial acoustic achievements. The primary starting point for information about Martin guitars is, of course, Martin Guitars: These pickups were the DeArmond humbuckers with chrome sides and a black center in a trapezoidal hole, large pole pieces along one side and smaller poles along the other.
The D E was a mahogany dreadnought with the neck pickup and a second bridge pickup. The typical Martin pickguard had the front point cut off and a notch in back to make room for the pickups rings. A three-way toggle was mounted on the upper treble bout. Controls included one volume and two tones, with the big plastic knobs. These began with prototype Around of these were produced. The D E was essentially the same as the D E except for a rosewood body, gold-finished pickups and Grover Roto-matic tuners.
The DeArmond Model pickup, introduced in the late s, was the first guitar pickup with six individually adjustable pole-pieces. The clever design enabled the height of each individual pole to be easily adjusted using a screwdriver, without disassembly or removal of any parts, or loosening the strings. This pickup was available in one height only, until some point between and , when a taller version was produced.

In many cases, these Japanese Fenders and Gibsons are of higher build quality, finish and tone than the US made versions. The Japanese models usually had a long tenon like the LP’s, and are not weight relieved, the US Standard version did not have a long tenon and is weight relieved. These are rare, and the ObG Reissue solid flametops are even rarer.
There were also a number of limited run series made for large Japanese guitar shops, such as Yamano, these can be spotted by the lack of a pickguard hole as they were ordered with the pickguards off, and are sometimes, but not always, solid flame tops, and one very limited run features solid Flametops, and a one piece back. Most of the ObG flametops are laminate, but there are some solid flametop guitars, these are extremely rare. There are some LPQ solid quilted models but again very rare.
There were no Orville by Gibson Photo-flame tops. Orville by Gibson’s used the premium wood available to the luthiers.

Outside of the mainstream pickup options, like Fender, Seymour Duncan, or EMG, you can find a lot of independent boutique pickup builders, like Jason Lollar. His Vintage T Series gives you that bridge position Tele twang, and the alnico five magnets add considerable bite and brightness to the sound.

The Gibson Tim Shaw pickup I just connected with one of my guitar engineering “heroes” online. To make a long story longer, 32 years ago, I yanked out the Gibson pickups on my newly bought Heritage 80 traded a BC Rich Seagull for it, good move on my part , thinking that they were just another not-so-great humbucker created by a then budget-conscious Gibson. Gibson Guitars were coming out of a bad period of ownership changes and accompanying not-so-great engineering.
Craftmanship on a budget. Success wasn’t coming easy for them at this point, as the glorious ‘s and ‘s were a full generation past. Great pickups, but perhaps not the authentic sound of the 50’s vintage originals. I didn’t know of any other options.

You must first determine what type of bridge is on your guitar. If you have a Floyd Rose system, there are 2 studs which hold the bridge system in place. You may adjust either the high or low side up or down with a 3mm wrench to achieve the desired action height.
Also, if your Kramer has “non-name”pickups or “Designed by Seymour Duncan” pickups, it is an overseas model. Finally, ifyour Kramer came with a Floyd Rose II, Floyd Rose with no fine tuners, or a Floyd Rose unit that does not require the ball ends of the strings to be cut off, it is an overseas model.
Simply Incredible In typical Leo Fender fashion, the original Strat pickup was an ingeniously simple yet highly effective design. It consisted of a flat, black vulcanised fibre bottom and top plate held together via tension with six sandcast hand-bevelled alnico magnet slugs, fitted into each corresponding hole, around which a coil of gauge formvar wire was wound by hand. White hot and black ground cloth wires were then soldered on before the whole assembly was potted in hot wax to minimise feedback and overly microphonic tendencies.
To overcome this limitation, Leo had the polepieces staggered into differing lengths. The first black bottom pickups were identifiable by a prominent fourth string slug, with the third string slug rising to a similar level later. There are many variables that impart certain characteristics and influence the overall sound of a pickup and some are far less calculable than others. Indeed, it is virtually impossible to identify two identical vintage examples, even on the same guitar.
In addition, when a vintage pickup ages the magnetism tends to decrease, rounding out the top end and marginally improving string sustain. After 10 years the formvar wire was changed to enamel. DC resistance tended to increase over the years from around 5. Alnico V magnets characteristically provided more scooped mids and tighter low-end Initially, the polepieces measured 0.
The lower strength Alnico III magnets used initally for a short time in were changed the following year to higher strength Alnico V magnets, which characteristically provided more scooped mids and tighter low-end. Whereas dating grey bottom Strat pickups is normally a case of reading a date format either handwritten or stamped , black bottom Strat pickups tend to display no such information and therefore require dating by spec details.

About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice. However, over the last decade or so, the MIMs has gotten a considerable face lift and the overall quality is very high.
In fact, the reason why they are cheaper, ha sless to do with quality but rather lower labour costs, cheaper type of laquer and apply methods etc. Japanese Fenders are considered to be above the Mexicans and perhaps even just as good as the US. In the 80s and early 90s, Japanese Fenders were well known for being superior to any other models and the quality is still top notch.
Maple or rosewood necks? Neck wood and contour plays an important role in how the guitar sounds and how it feels to play.
